Idrisu Dauda Dabban, commissioner of police in Kogi, says four officers have been detained over alleged extortion and assault of travellers.

He made this known on Sunday in a statement signed by William Aya, the command’s public relations officer.

Dabban said the command got to know about the event through a viral online video.

He said an investigation has been launched into the allegations against the police officers.

The officers allegedly extorted and assaulted the travellers while on patrol duty along Adogo-Okene road.

The commissioner condemned the incident, adding that the police officers had been identified and detained at the state criminal investigation department.

He said the officers involved are “ASP Isah Barnabas, Insp. Ifediegwu Godwin, Sgt. Emmanuel Ochima and Cpl. Umameh Mathias who was alleged to have physically assaulted a traveller”.

He said that Barnabas had been issued an official query while the other three junior officers were currently undergoing an orderly room trial (police internal disciplinary action).

Dabban assured that the officers, if found guilty, would be dealt with accordingly.
