The police command in Borno says its operatives have arrested a suspect in connection with a viral video on social media showing the physical abuse of a minor in Maiduguri, the state capital.
On March 16, the suspect, Bukar Modu, was recorded while physically assaulting a 10-year-old boy identified as Bashir Babaji.
In a statement issued on Monday, Nahum Daso, the police spokesperson in Borno, said preliminary investigations revealed that the child, who is his student, was allegedly punished for absconding from class.
According to the police, the incident happened in the Bulabulin Alajeri area along Baga-road in Maiduguri.

“While the Command appreciates the public’s concern and compassion over the incident, we urge citizens to refrain from making inflammatory or disruptive comments that could incite unrest or jeopardize ongoing investigations.”
The police spokesperson said the command is committed to upholding justice and ensuring the safety and welfare of all children in the state.
“We assure the public that this case will be pursued with the utmost diligence and transparency,” he added.
