The Gombe police command says its operatives have arrested a suspect over the alleged possession of fake $1,000 notes.
In a statement on Wednesday, Buhari Abdullahi, police spokesperson in Gombe, said 35-year-old Usman Kawu was arrested on June 28 by officers attached to the Lawanti Airport division.
Abdullahi said Kawu, who is from Kuji Kwadon village in Yamaltu-Deba LGA, was found with 10 pieces of $100 bills amounting to $1,000 (about N1.5 million) suspected to be fake.
“The suspect was found in possession of suspected counterfeit of United States dollar notes, which he attempted to use to deceive unsuspecting members of the public,” the statement reads.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that he was in possession of ten (10) pieces of one-hundred-dollar ($100) notes suspected to be fake.
“In local currency, the amount is equivalent to N1,500,000 (one million five hundred thousand Naira). He also had N10,000 (ten thousand Naira) in Nigerian currency, all were concealed inside his inner short trousers and recovered as exhibits.”
The police spokesperson said Kawu confessed to the crime during interrogation and claimed the counterfeit notes were handed to him by an accomplice whose name was withheld.

Abdullahi noted that efforts are ongoing to arrest the accomplice and recover more exhibits, adding that investigations are still in progress.
He assured residents of Gombe of police commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and the financial integrity of the state.
