The Enugu police command says it has arrested three masqueraders for allegedly assaulting residents during a cultural celebration in Nsukka area of the state.

In a statement on Tuesday, Daniel Ndukwe, the command’s spokesperson, said the suspects were arrested on Monday, at about 3:30pm, with the help of community members.

He said the arrest followed a viral video showing members of the ‘Oriokpa’ masquerade group physically assaulting people during an event held on Sunday.

“The suspects, along with others still at large, took advantage of the masquerade celebration to assault several innocent members of the public, inflicting bodily injuries on them,” the statement reads.

“One of the victims was hospitalised as a result of the injuries sustained.”

Ndukwe said the masqueraders initially fled when police arrived but were later apprehended with the support of residents.

Mamman Giwa, the Enugu commissioner of police, has ordered a thorough investigation of the incident.

He warned that while masquerade festivals are an important part of Nigeria’s cultural heritage, they should not be used as a cover to commit crimes or disrupt public peace.

“The command assures the public that all those involved in the assault will be brought to justice,” Ndukwe added.
