The Cross River state police command has criminalised the use of vehicles with unapproved tinted glasses.

Irene Ugbo, the spokesperson of the command, said on Wednesday that the decision was taken to check the use of vehicles with tinted glass to perpetuate criminality in the state.

Ugbo warned that vehicle owners found with tinted glass without permit, would be prosecuted according to the law.

“The Nigeria Police, Cross River Command in particular, has observed with dismay the way and manner individuals without any authorisation or permission, artificially tint their vehicles, unregistered, or covered for selfish purposes,” NAN quoted Ugbo as saying in a statement.

“In view of the above, the Command wishes to advise members of the public to shun or desist from this practice as anyone caught indulging in this illegal practice will face the full wrath of the law.

“To this end, vehicle owners (private/commercial) are enjoined to produce their permit when the need arises, while artificially tinted permit users are warned to personally deface the tinted glasses for security reasons.”

On June 7 2021, Usman Baba, the former inspector general of police (IGP) ordered the suspension of issuance of permits for tinted glasses and SPY number plates for vehicles.

Baba explained that the decision was taken to end the misuse of tinted glasses and SPY number plates by unauthorised users.

But the former police chief said cars with factory-fitted tinted glasses were exempted from the ban.
