Police, Boko Haram fighters exchange gunfire in Kano

Policemen engaged suspected members of the Boko Haram sect in a gun battle in Kano on Sunday morning, according to Premium Times.

The news website said the police officers were members of a special task force set up by the inspector general of police.

Five suspects, including two women suspected to be wives of the militants, were reportedly arrested.

As of the time this report was filed, Musa Majiya, spokesman of the Kano state police command, could not be reached for comments as he neither answered his call nor responded to a text message sent.

Although, he north-east is the stronghold of the sect, it has carried out coordinated attacks in Kano, one of the states in the north-west.

Boko Haram has continued to unleash havoc on the country despite the security measures put in place.

On Friday, Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff, ordered his men to capture Abubakar Shekau, leader of the sect, dead or alive.

He gave the order after the military boasted that Boko Haram had been degraded.
