Police: Boy who stood before Obi’s convoy was remanded over robbery incident

The Lagos state police command says Alabi Quadri, the teenager who went viral in the buildup to the 2023 election, was arrested and remanded for alleged public disturbance and robbery. 

Quadri made an appearance before Peter Obi’s motorcade during the politician’s campaign stop in Lagos. The photograph of that chance meeting gained traction on social media.

The teenager was released on Thursday after spending several months in jail.

He was reportedly taken to the police station by some young men in his neighbourhood over claims that he was among a group of robbers terrorising the community.

In a statement, Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson of the Lagos police command, said Quadri is 18 years old and no longer a minor.

He said Quadri was remanded at the correctional centre following his involvement in violent attacks and public disturbance in the Amukoko area.

According to the police, on January 22, a significant breach of public peace occurred in Amukoko when groups of youths engaged in violent confrontations, leading to street fights that caused widespread violence.

During the incident, several innocent bystanders were reportedly robbed and injured.

Community members, some of whom witnessed the incident, “provided crucial information and identified several individuals involved”, the police said.

Victims of the robbery also came forward to give statements and identified the alleged perpetrators.

Hundeyin said following a police investigation, Quadri and four others were arrested and charged.

“The Lagos state police command undoubtedly reiterates its commitment to upholding the rule of law to ensure justice in all matters, and also ensuring the safety and security of all residents,” he said.

“All police actions taken in this case have been in the laid-down processes and in accordance with due process, procedures, and based on credible evidence gathered during the investigation.

“We urge the public to remain calm and allow the judicial process to take its course and be fully exhausted in the case.”

Inihebe Effiong, Quadri’s lawyer, said the police must pay N100 million as compensation to Quadri and tender a public apology to the teenager.
