Weapons recovered from armed robbery suspects by police in Anambra
The Anambra police command has arrested five suspected members of a kidnapping and armed robbery syndicate in Awka.
In a statement on Thursday, Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson, said the suspects were apprehended on August 27 following a report that a victim was abducted on his farmland at Isiagu, Awka, and later released after ransom was paid.
The spokesperson said police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) stormed the suspects’ hideout at Notoko, Awka, where they were arrested.
Those arrested include Michael Nwobodo, 30; Eze Friday, 29; Uche Okolo, 23; Chinedu Gilbert, 29; and Dominic Oraz, a 38-year-old; who allegedly confessed to deserting the Nigerian Army in November 2024.
Items recovered from the suspects include six automatic pump-action guns, 63 rounds of live cartridges, three Motorola walkie-talkies, two police teargas canisters, five machetes, a rocket launcher, criminal charms, a military cap, a robber’s rocket launcher, handcuffs, a microscope, a jack knife, a power bank, and N26,000 in cash.
Ikioye Orutugu, the commissioner of police in Anambra, commended the operatives “for their gallantry” and assured residents of the command’s commitment to tackling violent crimes in the state.
The arrest comes a week after police operatives nabbed three suspects in separate cases of alleged rape involving minors.
