Police bust gang ‘posing as security operatives to steal’ car parts in Lagos

The Lagos police command has arrested Jude Onouha, an alleged 46-year-old kingpin of a notorious gang.

According to the police, the group disguises as security personnel to vandalise high-end vehicles in the city.

The police added that the gang uses fake security uniforms, and a modified Mercedes-Benz car jack made to look like a firearm, to gain access into gated communities.

According to Babaseyi Oluseyi, deputy police public relations officer, the gang deceived residential estate security by posing as operatives conducting investigations.

“The suspect and his gang specialized in disguising themselves as security operatives, wearing fake uniforms and using a modified Mercedes-Benz car jack, crafted to resemble a firearm, to deceive unsuspecting estate security personnel,” the statement reads.

“Under the false pretense of conducting security investigations, they gained access into several residential estates.”

“Once inside, they targeted luxury SUVs including Toyota Hilux, Toyota Highlander, Lexus 650, and Mercedes-Benz models, systematically removing expensive components such as brainboxes, wiring systems, side mirrors, and control devices.”

The police said Onouha is cooperating with detectives and has confessed to the crime as investigations continue.

Police recovered the fake firearm, and a cap labelled ‘Special Force’, with the command adding that efforts are underway to apprehend other gang members.

The command urged estate managers and security guards to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a security officer before granting access.

The police said residents are encouraged to contact their local divisional police officer or the command’s emergency numbers for verification and quick response.
