Police foil attempts to ‘smuggle 115 jerrycans of petrol’ into Niger Republic

The jerrycans seized by police

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) says its border patrol unit intercepted over 100 jerrycans of petrol allegedly being smuggled out of the country into Niger Republic.

Benjamin Hundeyin, force public relations officer, detailed the incident in a statement on X on Saturday.

Hundeyin said officers on stop-and-search duty along the Illela–Sokoto highway intercepted a vehicle loaded with 80 jerrycans of petrol and arrested the driver, identified as Yasir Adamu.

“After preliminary investigation, it was discovered that the suspect was attempting to smuggle the petroleum product across the border into the Niger Republic,” he said.

He added that in a similar operation in Katsina state, operatives of the unit recovered another 35 jerrycans — each containing 25 litres of petrol — abandoned by suspects who fled on sighting the police team.

Hundeyin said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.

The spokesperson added that Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police (IGP), commended the officers for their vigilance and professionalism, reiterating the force’s commitment to tackling economic crimes across the country.
