A police inspector identified as Aminu Ibrahim has reportedly died from an accidental gunshot while on duty in Kano state.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focusing on the Lake Chad region, the incident occurred around 5:40 am on Saturday in the Hotoro area of Kano.
The officer, attached to the Hotoro division under Kano state police command, reportedly entered a toilet within the premises of Basnaj Global Resources Limited when the firearm discharged.
Makama said preliminary investigation indicates that Ibrahim accidentally shot himself in the stomach while squatting with his loaded AK-47 rifle hanging around his neck.

“The rifle, with registration number GT 4177, was recovered cocked and unsafe, alongside an empty shell. Twenty-nine rounds of ammunition were accounted for against the 30 earlier issued to him,” Makama quoted a source as saying.
The officer was taken to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead. His remains have since been deposited in a nearby mortuary for autopsy.
Haruna Abdulahi, police spokesperson in Kano, could not be reached for comments on the incident, as calls and SMS to his phone went unanswered at the time of this report.
