Police kill ‘gang member’, recover weapon in Anambra

The Anambra police command says its operatives have killed a member of an armed gang at Igboukwu in Aguata LGA of the state.

In a statement on Sunday, Tochi Ikenga, spokesperson of the command, said one of the four members of the gang attacked police officers at a checkpoint before he was gunned down.

“Police officers attached to Anambra state police command have smashed an armed gang at Igboukwu in Aguata LGA,” the statement reads.

“The gang which boarded a commercial bus from Nnewi today, Sunday 14th January 2024 arrived police checkpoint and were stopped for a search.

“One of the hoodlums alighted pulled a Baretta pistol and was gunned down. A search of the bag they were travelling with yielded a concealed dagger.”

According to Ikenga, Aderemi Adeoye, the commissioner of police in Anambra,  commended the officers for their vigilance while directing the state criminal investigation department to commence a thorough investigation on the case.

The police reiterated their commitment towards safeguarding lives and property in the state.

“The commissioner of police, CP Aderemi Adeoye who praised the police personnel for their vigilance has directed the state criminal investigation department to take over the case for a thorough investigation,” he added.

“He has also ordered the immediate release of two elderly passengers who boarded the bus at a different location.

”The command wishes to assure the good people of Anambra state that it will always live up to its responsibility in safeguarding lives and property of all law-abiding citizens in the state.”
