The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says a police officer and a female passenger died on Tuesday when a 40-foot container truck overturned onto a tricycle on the Ijora Causeway.

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, LASTMA general manager, said the accident occurred as the truck, with registration number XP 368 AKD, attempted a risky manoeuvre beneath the Ijora Bridge and lost control, crushing the tricycle with registration number KJA 364 QN.

“Two passengers, including a serving police officer, died instantly,” Bakare-Oki said in a statement.

He said the police officer’s remains have been taken to a mortuary in Yaba, while relatives of the female passenger rushed to the scene to recover her body.

According to him, LASTMA personnel and emergency responders rescued two other victims, including the tricycle driver, from the wreckage alive, noting that they suffered severe bilateral leg fractures.

Bakare-Oki said the victims were rushed to Jimsan Hospital, Gasikiya, Ijora, by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) for urgent treatment.

He said security personnel from Badia, Trinity, and Kirikiri police divisions cordoned off the scene to control the scene to control the crowd and prevent angry onlookers from setting the container truck on fire, ensuring emergency workers’ safety during the rescue operation.
