Police officer, scavenger killed in Lagos road accident

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says a police officer and a scavenger died in a fatal road accident at Ilubirin inward Simpson, on Lagos Island.

In a statement on Wednesday, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, LASTMA’s general manager, said preliminary investigations showed that a speeding Toyota Camry (MUS 885 JA) lost control, veered out of its lane, and struck the victims.

“The impact resulted in their immediate and irreversible loss of life,” Bakare-Oki said.

He said LASTMA operatives at the scene quickly cordoned off the area to prevent further accidents and apprehended the driver, who tried to escape.

Bakare-Oki said the driver was handed over to the Adeniji Adele police division for investigation and prosecution, adding that the vehicle was also removed by LASTMA to restore traffic flow.

The LASTMA GM described the accident as a painful reminder of the dangers of reckless driving.

He urged motorists to comply with speed limits and maintain road discipline, noting that speed violations are a major cause of avoidable deaths on Lagos roads.

The LASTMA boss also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ongoing public education on road safety, calling on all drivers to adopt safer driving habits to prevent further tragedies.
