Police recover bombs, ammunition from scrap depot in Kaduna

Some of the unexploded bombs and ammunitions recovered by Kaduna state police

The Kaduna police command says its operatives have recovered explosive devices and ammunition from a scrap depot in the state capital.

In a statement on Wednesday, Mansir Hassan, spokesperson of the command, said the discovery followed intelligence received about suspicious items spotted at a scavengers’ company located in the Kudandan industrial area of Kaduna south LGA.

“On Friday, acting on credible intelligence received, the command was alerted to the presence of suspicious items believed to be unexploded ordnance (UXOs) at a scavenger’s company located around the Kudandan Industrial Area in Kaduna South Local Government Area,” the statement reads.

The police spokesperson said the items were reportedly mixed with waste materials recently transported into the state from Borno.

Hassan added that a team from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, led by its commander, was immediately deployed to the scene.

“After a thorough assessment, the items were confirmed to be unexploded military-grade ordnance bombs,” he said.

“The EOD team immediately evacuated the UXOs to a secure location, where they will be safely demolished in line with established safety protocols.

“In the course of the operation, the following additional items were also recovered: one locally fabricated revolver pistol fully loaded with six rounds of ammunition, 15 rounds of 7.2mm live ammunition, three live cartridges, and other assorted ammunition.”

Muhammad Rabiu, commissioner of police in Kaduna, ordered the immediate sealing of the premises to allow the EOD unit to conduct a detailed sweep of the facility.

Rabiu reaffirmed the command’s commitment to public safety, while imploring residents to provide timely intelligence capable of preventing threats and enhancing overall security in Kaduna.

The commissioner warned scavenger firms against receiving items from crisis zones, and directed area commanders and divisional officers to enforce compliance and arrest any defaulters immediately.
