The Imo police command has released Clinton Amadi, the Labour Party (LP) candidate for Owerri municipal constituency.

Amadi was arrested on Tuesday at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Owerri, the Imo state capital.

He was apprehended when he went to obtain the certified true copies of INEC results to prosecute his case at the election petition tribunal.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political parties had rejected the results of the Imo assembly elections, where the All Progressives Congress (APC) won 26 of the 27 seats.

Ugochukwu Obodo of the APC was declared the winner of the Owerri municipal election but the LP candidate claimed that he won the election, citing the results on INEC’s portal.

Fabian Ihekweme, a chieftain of the LP in the state, confirmed the release of the LP candidate.

“He was released yesterday (Thursday) after they learnt that his lawyer had already filed his election petition in the tribunal,” he said.
