The Enugu police command, on Friday, said its operatives repelled an attack by gunmen on the divisional headquarters in Aguobu-Owa community in Ezeagu LGA of the state.

A police officer was said to have sustained injury during a gun duel between the attackers and the officers, and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital.

Confirming the incident, Daniel Ndukwe, the Enugu police spokesman, said the incident took place in the early hours of Friday.

“Full-scale investigation has commenced to fish out the yet-to-be identified hoodlums, who, operating in a black-coloured Corolla car, attacked Ezeagu police divisional headquarters,” he said.

There have been several attacks on police stations and other government facilities in the south-eastern part of the country in recent times.

On Tuesday, two members of a neighbourhood watch group in Ogurute, Enugu-Ezike, were killed when gunmen attacked their office in Enugu.

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been blamed for the attacks, but the group has insisted that it is not responsible for the recent violence.

Meanwhile, as part of efforts to improve security in the south-east region, Usman Baba, the inspector-general of police (IGP), launched the ‘operation Restore Peace’.
