Police ‘rescue’ 11 passengers abducted in Benue

The police command in Benue says its operatives have rescued 11 passengers who were recently kidnapped in Okpokwu LGA of the state

On June 22, 13 passengers, including the driver of a Benue Links bus, were abducted by gunmen at Eke-Elengbecho community.

The bus was traveling from Abeokuta, Ogun state, to Makurdi, before it was intercepted by armed men.

Two of the kidnap victims had earlier been rescued.

A statement issued on Sunday by Udeme Edet, Benue police spokesperson, said the police got information that the kidnappers were moving the victims through Ondo village in Ugbokolo area of Benue state. Edet said the victims were located in the bush and rescued.

“Acting on credible intelligence that the kidnappers were moving the victims through the bush path around Ondo Village in Ugbokolo, Okpokwu LGA, operatives swiftly mobilised and conducted an extensive search operation,” the statement reads.

“‎After hours of combing the area, eleven (11) victims were safely located and rescued.

“One suspect has been arrested in connection to the kidnapping,while effort is being sustained to identify and arrest the other suspects.

“The victims are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and psychological support.

“‎This operation comes just one week after two (2) other victims from the same incident were rescued and reunited with their families.”
