The Rivers state police command has announced temporary restrictions on movement on August 30 for the LGA election.

Speaking with journalists on Thursday, Grace Iringe-Koko, the command’s spokesperson, said the restriction would be effective from 12 am to 6 pm, covering both pedestrian and vehicular movement.

She clarified that the restrictions excluded those performing essential duties on election day.

“The move aims to ensure a peaceful and orderly election, with security personnel deployed across land and waterways to safeguard voters and election officials,” she said.

“We urge residents to cooperate fully with security agencies and comply with the restriction. Report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.”

In July, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) scheduled August 30 for the LG polls in the south-south state.

In February, the supreme court nullified the LG election conducted in Rivers on October 5, 2024, during the administration of Siminalayi Fubara.

The apex court held that there was no evidence to show that the conditions set out in section 150(3) of the Electoral Act were met before the RSIEC conducted the polls.

In March, President Bola Tinubu suspended Fubara, his deputy, and the legislative arm for six months over an alleged political crisis in the state.

The president then appointed Ibok-Ete Ibas as the sole administrator with a term limit of six months.
