The police have sealed off the Benue state house of assembly following the crisis between lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Torese Agena, clerk of the assembly, told journalists that lawmakers and workers in the assembly complex were ejected by the police  on Tuesday.

The clerk called on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct Ibrahim Idris, inspector-general of police (IGP), to withdraw his officers from the premises of the assembly.

He said the action of the police would affect legislative activities.

Terver Akase, spokesman of Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue, confirmed the incident to TheCable.

“The clerk of the house confirmed this. The security adviser to the governor also confirmed this,” Akase said

“He contacted the commissioner of police and the commissioner of police said he has order from above to chase out the civil servants and seal of the state assembly.”

When contacted, Moses Yamu, spokesman of the police in Benue, feigned ignorance.

He said: “Which police sealed it? I think I will have to find out, too. Let me make inquiries.”

On Monday, Terkimbir Ikyange, ex-speaker of the assembly, led seven lawmakers to the assembly in attempt to impeach Samuel Ortom, governor of the state.

The lawmakers have since been suspended.
