Police secure over 200 convictions between July and Sept in Borno

The Borno police command says about 250 persons have been convicted for various crimes within the past three months in the state.

Mohammed Lawan, commissioner of police in the state, spoke on Monday while addressing journalists on the accomplishment of the command in Maiduguri, the Borno capital.

Lawan said the convictions were secured between July 1 and September 30.

He said 537 suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from culpable homicide, robbery, vandalism, public nuisance, and gender-based violence during the period.

“The success recorded in timely prosecution and conviction of the suspects is as a result of the recently accented Borno state penal code law 2023,” the police commissioner said.

“This is part of the efforts of the governor in restoration of peace in the state for sustainable growth and development.”

He commended the administration of Babagana Zulum, governor of the state, for revisiting the Borno penal code.

Noted that the law enabled the conviction process and stipulated the punishment for the offenders.

In September, Zulum signed nine bills into law, including the criminal justice administrative law to address cases of rape, political thuggery and violence among other crimes.

According to NAN,  one of those convicted is 37-year-old Hamisu Dauda, a resident of Panshani village in Shani LGA, who raped a 65-year-old woman in the area.

Dauda was said to have also robbed the woman of the sum of N42,700 after sexually abusing her.

Also, Umar Goni, a 25-year-old resident of Monguno LGA was convicted for stabbing a man identified as Zarami Modu, for allegedly enticing his wife.
