Policeman shot dead as robbers break into Ekiti bank

A policeman was shot dead in an attack on a bank in Oye-Ekiti local government area of Ekiti state on Thursday.

A witness told TheCable that immediately the robbers, numbering 10, stormed the bank located along Ilupeju street in the town, they started shooting sporadically.

This made staff and customers panic as they ran for cover. The attackers reportedly used dynamites to destroy the security door at the entrance of the bank.

Residents of the community scuttled to safety as the robbers kept shooting into the air without any challenge from security operatives.

Burnt police van seen from afar

On their way out of the bank, the attackers were said to have burnt a police van parked by the roadside.

The number of those killed is not yet known but there are reports that a five-year-old girl who was returning from school was hit by a stray bullet.

Banks in remote areas have been target of robbery attacks.

On April 5, 2018, some armed robbers attacked five commercial banks in the community, killing at least 17 persons, including police officers.
