Mobile policemen escorting a bullion van allegedly opened fire on the car of Olu Falae, former secretary to the federal government, along Akure Ile-Ife expressway in Osun state on Tuesday.

Narrating the incident to journalists, the elder statesman, who was on his way to Ile-Ife to attend a meeting of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, wondered why his vehicle was targeted.

“I was approaching Akure from Ilesa when I saw some vehicles ahead of me. There was a bullion van in front. The vehicles ahead of us were overtaking the bullion van and we also followed,” he said.

“I nearly passed them when I heard a shot and I heard a bang on my car. We stopped and we saw that they had fired at our car.

“They didn’t stop. We stopped at Erin-Ijesa and complained to the police at the check-point that we were fired at by some police following a bullion van at Ile-Oluji juction.

“I don’t know why I was kidnapped recently, why I was arrested in 1997 and locked up for two years and now shot.”

In September, gunmen stormed the septuagenarian’s farm in Ondo, and whisked him away. The incident happened on his birthday.

Falae regained freedom after spending four days in captivity.

This is what an average Nigerian experiences everyday. A country where cash or cattle is more precious than human life. Where people are killed to protect cash or to feed the cattles from cultivated farmlands.
