Pope Leo XVI has expressed deep concern over the recent wave of kidnappings in Nigeria and Cameroon, calling for the immediate release of abducted priests, students, and other victims.
In a tweet on Sunday, the pontiff described the situation as a source of great pain, particularly for the young men and women taken and the families enduring the distress of their abduction.
“I was deeply saddened to learn of the kidnapping of priests, faithful, and students in Nigeria and Cameroon. I feel great pain, above all for the many young men and women who have been abducted and for their distressed families,” he said.
The pontiff made a heartfelt appeal to authorities to take timely and appropriate measures to secure the release of the hostages.

He noted the need for decisive action to protect those affected and to restore safety and hope in communities shaken by the attacks.
“Let us #PrayTogether for these brothers and sisters of ours, and that churches and schools may always and everywhere remain places of safety and hope,” he added.
Pope Leo’s appeal comes amid a spate of abductions in the north-west and north-central geopolitical zones, including the recent attacks on St. Mary’s Private Catholic School in Papiri, Niger state, where over 300 students were kidnapped, and attacks in Cameroon targeting schools and clergy.
