Azeezat Shomuyiwa, a female postgraduate student of the University of Ibadan, was found dead in her apartment at Aba Ijefun, Akinyele area, Oyo state, on Friday.

The victim, who was seven months pregnant, was said to have been murdered by unknown persons.

She was a postgraduate student of the department of social work at the University of Ibadan.

The development comes less than a week after 18-year-old Barakat Bello, a student of the Federal College of Animal Health and Production, Ibadan, was raped and killed in her home in Akinyele local government area of Oyo state.

In a statement, Akeju Olusegun and Oladeji Abiodun, UI students’ union president and public relations officer, clarified that Azeezat was not raped, contrary to earlier reports on social media.

“The news of the death of our student from the Postgraduate School, Shomuyiwa Azeezat, was going around early this morning. She was a student of Social Work department, Faculty of Education,” the statement read.

“On a visit to the deceased’s residence this afternoon by the Students’ Union leaders, it was confirmed by neighbours that she was hit with heavy stone on the head and no confirmation of any incidence of rape.

The Oyo state government has promised to ensure the arrest of those involved in the killing of Azeezat and Barakat.

In a statement, by Taiwo Adisa, chief press secretary to the governor, said residents told Fatai Owoseni, special adviser to the governor on security matters, and Enwonwu Nwachukwu, the new Oyo commissioner of police, that the late Shomuyiwa was hit with a big stone while inside her room.

They also said the woman returned from Kano in February, where her husband had just secured employment after completing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
