Premplus, REA sign strategic MoU to establish a National Energy Innovation Hub, targets new benchmark for technical skills development in Nigeria

On Friday the 14th of November 2025, Premplus Limited, an indigenous Renewable Energy Service Company officially signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to upgrade and optimize the world-class Energizing Education Programme (EEP) Workshop and Training Centre across select Federal Universities into a world-class National Energy Innovation Hub. This strategic partnership marks a major step towards strengthening Nigeria’s renewable energy innovation ecosystem and building a highly skilled clean energy workforce across the States.

The signing ceremony, held at the REA Headquarters in Abuja, formalized a unique public-private partnership designed to accelerate technical skills acquisition, applied research, and enterprise development in the clean energy sector. Under the MoU, Premplus Ltd. will collaborate closely with REA to reposition the existing facilities into a fully functional hub that will support training, innovation, technology demonstration, and entrepreneurship in solar, mini-grid, battery storage, and energy efficiency solutions.

Leaning on a unique Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) framework, Premplus has secured a strategic technical partnership with Brunel University, London, which strengthens the company’s existing framework and enables access to top researchers and innovators from across the world. Through this strategic collaboration, this initiative targets fostering innovation, building local expertise, and sustaining the Federal Government’s ongoing renewable energy scale-up efforts through the REA’s Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) programme.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Managing Director/CEO, of the Rural Electrification Agency, Dr. Abba Abubakar Aliyu commended Premplus for its commitment to advancing local content and technical capacity in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector. While emphasizing the Agency’s expectations, Dr. Abba explained that he expects “Premplus to take the lead in TVET as a private sector player, facilitating an exemplar model for certified technical skills acquisition and training in renewable energy in Nigeria and a model for national replication”.

Dr. Abba added that “this collaboration presents a unique opportunity to deepen Nigeria’s clean energy talent pipeline while strengthening innovation, research, and enterprise support across the country”. He explained that the REA is committed to working with dedicated private sector partners like Premplus to unlock high-impact solutions with the goal of improving energy access, stimulating economic growth, and creating jobs for young people.”

The Managing Director/CEO, Premplus Ltd., Engr. Zaharadeen Usman, expressed appreciation to the REA leadership for the confidence reposed in the company and reaffirmed Premplus’ readiness to deliver on the mandate. He noted that “the Hub will be structured to ensure long-term sustainability through robust technical training programs, industry partnerships, and innovation-driven models that support local solutions”. “Leveraging the REA’s existing Workshop and Training Centers in Federal Universities and leaning on the Agency’s leadership and strategic direction, this project will become a national reference point for renewable energy skills development and innovation,” Engr. Usman said.

The collaboration reinforces REA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s energy access ecosystem and accelerate the development of a competitive local clean energy industry through technical skills acquisition. It also reflects the commitment of both institutions towards promoting inclusive, sustainable, and future-driven solutions aligned with national energy transition goals.
