PROFILE: The 1st-class lawyer, Hints publisher and Harvard graduate chosen to head NNPC

Emmanuel Kachikwu took over the leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Tuesday.

A first-class graduate of Law from the University of Nigeria (UNN),  Nsukka, Enugu state, and the Nigerian Law School, Kachikwu was the executive vice-chairman and general counsel of Exxon-Mobil (Africa).

The new NNPC chief executive also has master’s and doctorate degrees in law from the Harvard Law School.

A former investment attorney in the United States, Kachiukwu has published several magazine titles, including Hints, which was a household name in the 90s.

He has also authored three published law books in investment law and contracts.

He started his working career with the Nigerian/American Merchant Bank before moving on to Texaco Nigeria Limited, where he remained for about eight years before joining ExxonMobil.

Kachikwu takes over from Joseph Dawha, who was appointed by former president, Goodluck Jonathan on August 1, 2014.

The appointment of the indigene of Onicha-Ugbo in Delta state will be well-received by many of Buhari’s critics, who continue to accuse him of populating federal appointments with northerners.
