…MTN brought back critically acclaimed Musical for Christmas

‘Legends, Kings and Kingdoms: the Musical’ made a second coming over the Christmas holidays and fans were not disappointed by some of Africa’s best heroes saving the day.

Sponsored by the MTN Foundation, the musical drama – a collaborative production of Seeing Through the Arts and Declassical Arts & Entertainment returned to the Shell Hall of the MUSON Centre in Lagos, from the 22nd to the 26th of December after a successful debut in late October. Directed by an alumnus of the MTN Foundation/MUSON training programme for creative professionals, Ayo Ajayi, it boasted such industry veterans as vocalist and lyricist Yinka Davies and Crown Troupe of Africa artistic director, Segun Adefila.

In the play, five African heroes: Nigeria’s Sango, Nana Yaa Asantewaa of the Ashanti in modern Ghana, Neferneferuaten Nefertiti of Egypt, Shaka, King of the Zulus in modern South Africa and Queen Amina of Zazzau in what is now northern Nigeria answer the call of a distressed princess to save her people, ‘Modaland,’ from a common foe – the Shadow.

The second iteration of Legends saw added scenes, more dance routines and an enhanced stage set up to the show’s innovative plot that saw a cast of historical African figures prove yet again the power of love and unity to overcome formidable odds.

Legends the Musical was part of the MTN Foundation’s Arts and Culture lineup of shows highlighting authentically Nigerian stories. In the last quarter of 2018 alone, the Foundation sponsored such critically acclaimed shows as Fela and the Kalakuta Queens, Legends the Musical, Life in My City Art Festival in Enugu, Our Son The Minister, the Made in Nigeria Poetry Show and Oba Esugbayi.
