One Mansur Shafiu was killed by suspected thugs during Saturday’s by-election in Igabi LGA of Kaduna state.

The deceased was said to have been hit by a stray bullet when the thugs invaded a polling unit in Rigachikun ward of the LGA.

The man was taken to a hospital where he was confirmed dead.

The incident sparked a protest on Sunday morning by enraged youths in the area who blocked the Kaduna-Zaria highway.

Masir Hassan, police spokesperson in Kaduna, confirmed the development to TheCable on Sunday night.

The police spokesperson said the deputy commissioner of police in charge of criminal investigation has been directed to fast-track investigation into the matter and ensure the culprits are arrested.

Hussaini Jallo, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was declared winner of the re-run election in Igabi federal constituency, condemned the killing.

In a statement, Jallo said the perpetrators must be made to face justice.

“We will engage the Nigeria Police Force to launch an immediate full-scale investigation with a view to fishing out the perpetrator of this killing and the deliberate attacks meted out to voters during our re-run election that led to the snatching of ballot boxes in Rigachikun, Unguwar Yelwa Birinin Yero, Kwarau, Mando, and Joga by hired thugs to face justice,” he said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the winners in the re-run elections in the north-west state.

Aisha Isa, the returning officer, announced Nurah Abdulkarim, candidate of the PDP, as the winner of the Kudan state constituency.

Isa said Abdulkarim polled 24,179 votes, to defeat Abbas Faisal, his closest challenger from the All Progressives Congress (APC), who secured 22,438 votes.

In the re-run election in Makera state constituency, Jamilu Ya’u, INEC returning officer, declared Dahiru Liman of the APC as the winner.

Ya’u said Liman got 180,068 votes.

For Chikun state constituency, Haladu Bayero, the returning officer, declared David Tanko, candidate of the APC as the winner with 18,566 votes.

The APC also won the Kauru state constituency, and Kachia/Kagarko federal constituency re-run election.
