Protest in Abuja as group demands resignation of NMDPRA CEO over ‘abuse of office’

The Concerned Lawyers and Civil Society in Defence of Public Trust, a civil society organisation (CSO), has demanded the resignation of Farouk Ahmed as the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

During a protest in Abuja, the nation’s capital, on Monday, the group said Ahmed should step down over an alleged abuse of office.

Martins Adaji, who spoke for the group, said a comprehensive investigation into the NMDPRA’s financial records is needed.

“This protest is about justice,” Adaji said.

“Today’s protest is not the end. If these demands are ignored, we will return stronger, louder, and more resolute.

“Nigerian youths, mothers, and civil society will occupy every relevant space to say: Enough is enough.”

On April 2, President Bola Tinubu made changes to the board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.

Tinubu appointed Bayo Ojulari as the NNPC group chief executive officer (GCEO) to replace Kyari, while Ahmadu Musa Kida was named the company’s non-executive chairman, replacing Pius Akinyelure.

On April 23, Wale Edun, the minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, said a forensic audit of the NNPC was underway.
