Protesters have blocked the inward lane of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos over the demolition of houses in Oworonshoki.

In the early hours on Saturday, a combined enforcement team of the Lagos state government commenced removal of all unapproved buildings along Lekki and Iyana Oworosonki coastal lines.

Affected residents, who turned out in large numbers on Monday morning, accused the Lagos state government of carrying out the exercise without adequate notice or compensation, leaving many families homeless.

The protest, which began at dawn, threw traffic into chaos, stranding motorists and forcing commuters to seek alternative routes into the mainland.

During the demonstration, the protesters confronted Moshood Jimoh, the Lagos commissioner of police, insisting they would not disperse until demolition equipment was withdrawn from Oworonshoki.

Security operatives were later deployed to restore order and clear the road.

The Lagos state government has yet to issue an official response to the protest or the demolition exercise.
