A group of protesters besieged the National Assembly gate on Wednesday to demand the reconvening of the federal house of representatives.

On October 28, Aminu Tambuwal, speaker of the house of representatives, adjourned the sitting of the house to December 3 after he announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The protesters who converged under the aegies of Nigerian Youth Movement for Peace and Justice also decried the scale of impunity in the country.

Speaking with TheCable, leader of the group, Bishop Amakiri, gave the house of representatives a 10-day ultimatum to reconvene or face mass protests.

“We are preaching peace, unity and justice in the country, and we are against impunity. What the speaker has done is wrong. There is too much impunity in the land. Our leaders just do whatever they like,” he said.

“We have not been sponsored by any political party, group or person. We are concerned youths of this country; that is why we have come out to protest against illegality.

“We are giving the house a 10-day ultimatum to reconvene or face millions of us in protest. If they are there for the interest of Nigerians they should reconvene the house, that’s our call. We are in a quagmire, and we need urgent solutions.”
