PRP asks Turaki to withdraw ‘reckless and unpatriotic’ call for Trump’s intervention in Nigeria

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has condemned remarks by Tanimu Turaki, factional national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), over his call for foreign intervention in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND

On Tuesday, Turaki asked US President Donald Trump to intervene in the party’s festering crisis.

Addressing the press after securing entry into the PDP headquarters in Abuja, following a prolonged confrontation between supporters of rival factions, Turaki appealed for help from abroad.

He asked Trump and the international community to save Nigeria’s democracy from collapse.

“I want to call on President Trump; what is at stake is not just genocide against Nigerian Christians,” Turaki had said.

“He should come and save democracy in Nigeria. Democracy is under threat. I’m calling on all other developed nations: come and save Nigeria, come and save democracy.”

DISPLAY OF INFERIORITY COMPLEX

However, in a statement on Tuesday, Falalu Bello, national chairman of PRP, said Turaki’s call for Trump and other advanced democracies to “come and save Nigeria” was “reckless and unpatriotic”.

Bello described the statement as “an alarming display of inferiority complex that continues to plague some of our so-called politicians and political leaders.”

The PRP chairman said Turaki’s remarks insulted Nigeria’s “sovereignty, independence, dignity and values that countless patriots have fought to uphold”.

“It reflects a troubling failure to have confidence in Nigeria’s inherent resilience, democratic institutions, no matter the general perception about them, and the collective strength of its people,” he said.

“Nigeria is a sovereign nation and founded as a republic — with defined territories, independent government and free from any external interference.”

He called on all political leaders to seek solutions through “internal dialogue, robust democratic processes, and patriotic leadership—not through external forces and foreign powers that may seek to manipulate our internal affairs for their own interests.”

Bello reminded Turaki and his supporters that Nigeria’s challenges require “genuine patriotism, unity, internally driven solutions and, of course, genuine partners that will not take advantage of the nation.”

He cited the 5th principle of PRP, which advocates total liberation from imperialism, stressing that “true independence is achieved when Nigeria’s destiny is determined by Nigerians themselves, not by foreign governments or their agents.”

He urged Turaki and the PDP to retract the “incendiary and misguided statement” and appealed to all Nigerian leaders to uphold the nation’s dignity.

“Any attempt to undermine this sovereignty in the name of ‘saving democracy’ is a betrayal of our national dignity and a setback to our collective progress,” Bello said.

“Nigeria’s strength lies in its people, its institutions, and its unwavering resolve to build a just and united nation.

“Let it be clear: Nigeria’s destiny is in the hands of its resilient people, and we refuse to allow foreign interference to dictate our future.”
