The Police Service Commission (PSC) has asked Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police (IGP), to sanction state commissioners of police found to be incompetent.

PSC condemned the recent killings of police officers in Imo and Delta states, saying the incidents have become worrisome.

In a statement signed by Ikechukwu Ani, PSC spokesperson, Solomon Arase, chairman of the commission, was quoted to have asked the IGP to “take another look at the capacity of state command leaderships” in order to halt the trend.

Arase said there must be consequences for the avoidable deaths of police officers, adding that “any state commissioner of police found incompetent and tactically porous should be eased out”.

The PSC chairman condoled with the families of the slain officers over the loss of their loved ones.

He encouraged serving officers not to be demotivated by the current happenings and that the force is known for “warding off new waves of assaults”.

Over the past few months, police officers have been casualties of the rising insecurity across the country.

On Saturday, at least two police officers were killed when gunmen attacked their patrol vehicle along old Gariki road in Okigwe, Imo state.

Also, six police officers were murdered in Delta state during a rescue operation of three of their colleagues, who were kidnapped in January.

Six other police officers have also gone missing since the rescue operation.
