The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of 5718 senior police officers to different ranks.
Ikechukwu Ani, PSC spokesperson, announced the development in a statement on Friday.
“The Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of 5718 senior Police Officers comprising both General duty and specialists cadres of the Force,” the statement reads.
The commission approved the promotion of 12 commissioners of police to the rank of assistant inspector general of police (AIG), elevated 19 deputy commissioners of police (DCP) to the substantive position of commissioners (CP), and promoted 21 assistant commissioners of police (ACP) to the subsequent rank of deputy commissioners (DCP).
Also, 33 chief superintendents of police (CSP) were elevated to the position of ACP.
Additionally, the commission approved the promotion of 265 superintendents of police (SP) to the rank of CSP, 99 deputy superintendents (DSP) to superintendents (SP), and 4750 assistant superintendents (ASP) were promoted to the rank of DSP.
Moreover, 146 ASPs, who were initially omitted during the May 2022 promotion exercise, were promoted to the position of DSP.
For the specialist cadre, the commission approved the promotion of two ACPs; one from airwing and the other from forensic to the next rank of DCP.
In addition. 47 CSPs comprising 23 medical doctors and 24 veterinary doctors were promoted to the rank of ASP.
Also, 190 SPs from the computer info-tech unit, eight from works, one from workshop, 12 from transport, two from forensic, two from handwriting, one from ballistics, one from religion, and one veterinary doctor were also promoted.
Furthermore, 47 specialists holding the rank of ASP from various units were promoted to DSP.
Ani said Solomon Arase, PSC chairman, urged the newly promoted officers to adopt a citizen-centric policing approach that respects fundamental rights.
Arase also commended the acting inspector-general of police (IGP), Olukayode Egbetokun, for facilitating widespread promotions across all departments of the force.
“This singular act I hope will motivate the workforce to give back their best in ensuring that issues of crimes and criminality are properly dealt with,” he said.
The 12 commissioners of police promoted to the rank of AIG are Ogundele Ayodeji, Patrick Edung, Badaru Lawal, Bartholomew Onyeka, Suleiman Yusuf, Idowu Owohunwa, Rhoda Olofu, Godwin Aghaulor, Effiom Ekot, Stanley Ude, Longe Patrick, and Ndu Anene.
