It’s raining; I’m drowning!

Only two weeks ago, I had written about the green-eyed monster who invaded people’s minds and prevented them from being empathetic towards others.

Following the events of the past weekend on the ‘Mainland’ in the Lagos metropolis, the law of humanity has since replaced that monster.

It ceases to be about the mainland or the island, what is fair and what isn’t, about floods or dry land.

The instinct to survive, the desire for health, knowledge and information, the concern for the safety and happiness of loved ones are all shared facets of the human experience.They inform our lives no matter who we are, no matter how different we are from others, no matter where we live.

The pain I feel in difficult times is the same pain that you feel in difficult times. The triggers are different, the circumstances are different, the degree of pain is different, but the basic involvement is the same.

Unfortunately, however, most people don’t focus on what they have in common with others, especially when they feel ashamed or inadequate. Rather than considering their imperfection in light of the shared human experience, they’re more likely to feel isolated and disconnected from the world around them when they fail.

When we focus on our shortcomings without taking the bigger human picture into account, our perspective tends to narrow. We become absorbed by our own feelings of insufficiency and insecurity.

When we’re in the confined space of self-loathing or unhappiness, it’s as if the rest of humanity doesn’t even exist. This isn’t a rational thought process, but a type of ‘emotional hole’.

Somehow it feels like I am the only one who is being dumped, not getting ahead, losing a job, or humiliated.

This is for you who is used to wallowing and crying, ‘It’s raining, I’m drowning’;
