Rare start for Mikel but Chelsea lose to Porto

There was a rare start for Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mikel but Jose Mourinho suffered yet another defeat with Chelsea as his return to FC Porto ended in a 2-1 loss.

Eden Hazard dropped to the substitute’s bench alongside captain John Terry and Nemanja Matic as Mourinho proved there were no untouchables in his squad to the benefit of the Nigerian who played for 62 minutes before he was substituted.

Cesc Fabregas almost opened the scoring in the sixth minute but his drive was beaten round the post by Iker Casillas – who was making a record-breaking 152nd appearance in the Champions League.

The hosts took the lead in the 39th minute from a rebound. Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic made a save from Yacine Brahimi, but the loose ball fell to Andre Andre who made no mistake in firing into an empty net.

The Blues equalised with the last kick of the half through Willian free kick. The Brazilian curled a fine effort into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Porto retook the lead in the 52nd minute from a corner which saw Maicon divert the ball past Begovic with a fine header.

Brown Ideye and his team Olympiakos recorded their first ever win on English soil in 50 years of trying as they made the most of a horrendous mistake from Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina to win 3-2 in London.

After falling behind to Felipe Pardo’s deflected opener, Arsenal equalised through Theo Walcott.

But Ospina, who kept regular first choice Petr Cech out of the team, allowed a Costas Fortounis corner to slip through his grasp for an embarrassing own goal.

Alexis Sanchez dragged Arsenal back into it with a second half equaliser, but slack defending gifted Iceland striker Alfred Finnbogason the winner.
