Marcus Rashford, the 19-year-old Manchester United forward, scored the only goal of the Manchester derby to close the gap on the league table between the two rivals to just a point.

Against the run of play, Mata found the teenager, who skinned Martin Demichelis with ease and slotted calmly into the net in the 16th minute to give United the lead.

That was his fifth goal since making his debut in the first team, having also scored braces in crucial games against FC Midtjylland and Arsenal.

With this result, Manchester City is one point clear of both United and West Ham in fourth place – the final Champions League qualification spot.
