Bruce: Reduce our salaries… teachers are more important than politicians

Bruce: Reduce our salaries… teachers are more important than politicians
October 05
22:03 2016

Ben Murray-Bruce, senator representing Bayelsa east, has called for a reduction in the salaries of politicians.

In a message posted on Facebook, the lawmaker lamented the plight of teachers, saying they deserve better pay.

Bruce said Nigeria would be a better country if teachers were properly remunerated.

“Nigeria has some of the highest paid politicians and some of the lowest paid teachers. Flip this equation and Nigeria will develop,” he wrote.

“On this World Teachers Day, I thank Nigeria’s teachers and urge that salaries of politicians be reduced so that teachers’ salary can be increased!

“Teachers are much more relevant to the progress of Nigeria than we politicians. A well paid teacher is a better teacher but is a well paid legislator a better legislator?”

Will just end up like Jibrin the whistle blower.
After exposing the deeds that he was a member of,nuttin happened and he was only suspended for 180 Legislative days while Nigerians watch.

He should sponsor the Bill and let’s see what happens.

He should also sponsor a Bill to disclose the details of NASS budget.

    Oga senator,
Your observations that teachers are under paid is a fact known by even the unborn child. You are the law makers. You all are moving motions to better your lives. As if that is not enough, your counterparts were busy padding an innocent budget.
If you are serious with with this issue, I will be the happiest to see a motion sponsored by your goodself on flipping of teachers’ salaries with that of our “law makers”

I think senator Ben Bruce and his likes should please, in the name of God almighty, stop taking us for fools. How can he come he substitute chamber with facebook and other social media to perform his basic responsibility. If he’s serious about his ‘common sense’ advocacy, we should hear of his battles on d floor of the red chamber everyday. All I know is that those half-baked, unemployed young able-bodied men will definitely make life unbearable for u and ur sophisticated children very soon. Their plight will soon be meted on u politicians and u shall find no sleep or peace in this country. Just mark my words. I wonder why Bruce thinks he’s making sense with a statement that is known to an unborn Nigerian child. Go and do what u’re voted for by sponsoring and fight for a bill to support ur social.media advocacies, bros….simple

Better pay for teachers & less for politicians will not only make the teaching profession more attractive but will also reduce political thuggery and violence due to stiff competition for political offices. Unfortunately, Senator Bruce does not mean it. He is creating an impression of a patriotic Nigeria before the public to prepare him for a higher political office in 2019. His sincerity will only be proved when he sponsors a bill on this issue

I really enjoin your kind gesture and outstanding personality sir. your political wit and astuteness is worthy of emulation. But as we all know, this is facebook and not the hallow chambers of the senate. it will interest we [the masses] if this issue is raised in the senate and deliberated on, and as such implemented. we believe more in action than words. then country is in a very hard economic doom at the moment and the top politicians are seriously earning high. the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, perpetuating the anachronism of wretchedness. we are so tired of this NEGATIVE CHANGE. I think it about time we “CHANGED THE CHANGE”.

So you know? Anyway, I have always said our leaders know the truth but but greed and curruption won’t let them do the right thing. God is watching. He certainly will judge all of you wicked souls. You think only of yourselves and not those who gave you their mandate. God in heaven is the ultimate judge. Be a real man and speak up or sponsor a bill in this regard. Let the credit be yours! Your bravery must be tested now or are you a coward? Expecting a bill on this soon. Be a hero!

Educational standard has fallen partly because NCE & B.A Ed, Ph.D (Ed) trained teachers have virtually been left un-recruited or pushed out of the system by invading B.A, M.A/M.Sc, Ph.D. non teachers who could not find jobs elsewhere, in their chosen fields. Teaching is now a profession for all-comers, though we have some disciplined people & parents in the system who are ok, but they should be made to go and do at least a 3 or 6 month Sandwitch course in Teacher Education.

At the home front, students are either from functional or dysfunctional homes with issues of divorce, seperation, step-mothers, poverty, illiteracy etc which impact on their overall mental, emotional and psychological well being.

Other issues are poor infrastructure, over-population in schools and poor remuneration of teachers. Why do we have Colleges of Education and University departments of Education if the products of these institutions are not fully engaged to teach in Nursery/Primary/Secondary/Universities?.
Can someone who did not train as a Medical Doctor work as a Medical Doctor or carry out operation in the theatre? Can someone who did not train as a Lawyer go and argue a case in Court? Why should Teaching be the profession to be compromized? Poor/falling standard of education is the basis of poor leadership that we see at all levels.
Another culprit is the private schools which are usually more interested in building beautiful infrastructure but recruit un-trained teachers who they pay poorly. When trained ones apply they say “We cannot pay you”. The proprietors smile to the Banks while everyone else is a loser : the student, the teacher, the parent and the nation. You cannot get the best from a poorly-paid teacher.

Teaching is the only profession that has been invaded by un-trained teachers many of who do not respect due process or know the ethics of the profession; many of these un-trained invaders are half-baked or not baked at all, they speak bad English, communicate with students using patronising language like : oko ashawo come here, come here my wife, come here my darling, why are you not smiling to me, what did you bring for me, so you don’t want to come and see me ok, when are you comming to see me? Go and buy me food, go and buy me something to drink, I have not eaten since morning, some even allow the students to sit on the table in their office etc many are not even good role models as parents either. A language that parents will not use for their children (Oko ashawo) why is it that a teacher should be the one to use such language? Many male teachers bring themselves to the level and even below the level of the students and engage in all sorts of patronizing language and acts with female students. This is inappropriate and unacceptable. It makes students to lose respect for teachers.
Many trained teachers have been frustrated out of the system. The quacks have taken over. Teaching is supposed to be an honourable profession preparing future manpower for national development but today it has turned into a different platform altogether where we read of teachers raping students and awarding un-deserved marks etc. Its a pity.
I am a trained teacher and I am still in the system unfortunately. I am often nauseated with what I confront daily. When I try to correct some of my so-called colleagues they do not take it lightly, they hate to be corrected and complain and one ends up making more enemies than friends. I once challenged a male teacher who called a male student saying : “come here, oko ashawo” and he did not like it at all and was upset. I am tired of what I see and hear daily in school by some so-called male teachers. I have decided to mind my business, close my eyes, my ears and above all my MOUTH.
Please ensure that only trained teachers are recruited in the teaching profession to maintain standard.

Your comment..You talk well sir. But i suggest you sponsor a bill at the red chamber concerning this matter to show how serious you are, not writing it on your facebook page. Nigerian teachers will be happy and pray for you if you can so at the red chamber floor.
