Ike Ekweremadu, deputy senate president, reportedly fell ill on Wednesday during interrogation by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Ekweremadu arrived the anti-graft agency’s office in Abuja on Tuesday where he was reportedly questioned for over eight hours.

The EFCC had invited him to offer explanations on why his name featured prominently in a money laundering case currently being investigated by the commission.

The deputy senate president was also accused of owning undeclared assets abroad, alleged to have been acquired through illicit funds.

“We were able to highlight additional 38 assets, added to the initial 22 on which he ought to give explanation,” an EFCC official was quoted as saying.

“The grilling started smoothly until he complained of discomfort and he was unable to continue to answer our questions. His sudden illness might have arise from high blood pressure.

“Since he needed urgent medical attention, we allowed him to go to the hospital of his choice for treatment.”

A medical report from the hospital confirming his fitness would determine resumption of his interrogation.
