Report for the World, an initiative of the GroundTruth Project, a non-profit organisation based in the United States, has announced the selection of nine journalists for its 2021 reporting corps.

In May, the organisation had announced TheCable as its first Nigerian partner newsroom to cover under-reported issues around the globe.

The programme is now supporting 15 journalists across three countries in its first year.

In a statement on Wednesday, the organisation noted that the second cohort of nine journalists will join Premium Times in Nigeria, The Wire in India, Marco Zero and InfoAmazonia, two Brazilian news organisations.

The new corps members are: Chiamaka Okafor, covering the Nigerian diaspora for Premium Times; Qosim Suleiman, covering education for Premium Times; Arnaldo Sete, photographer for Marco Zero; and Giovanna Carneiro, environment and social impact of development reporter for Marco Zero.

For The Wire, Aathira Perinchery will be covering the environment; Banjot Kaur, health; and Kaushal Shroff, political economy.

Others are Fábio Bispo covering climate change and environmental policies for InfoAmazonia; and Julia Dolce, covering Indigenous peoples and other traditional populations for InfoAmazonia.

“After we announced our first cohort of journalists, the message from local news organisations around the world was loud and clear. To sustainably serve our communities, we need more help, and we need more reporters,” said Kevin Grant, co-founder and chief content officer of GroundTruth.

“And it’s no surprise that almost half of the journalists will be covering health or the environment.”

Report for the World will open a call for new host newsroom partners around the world in 2022 and aims to support 500 corps members in 25 countries by 2026.
