The house of representatives has passed for second reading, a bill seeking to protect the identity of security personnel, sources and informants from unlawful disclosure.
The bill also seeks to protect their establishments and facilities from authorised access.
Oluwole Oke, sponsor of the bill, from Osun state, said the security personnel were no longer confident in carry out their duties because they do not feel protected by the law.
He explained that the bill was necessary because it would give the security personnel confidence in doing their duty to keep the country safe.
Contributing to the debate, Segun Odebunmi, a legislator from Oyo, said if the bill was passed into law, Nigerians would be confident to give necessary information to security personnel on crime.
“We are moving forward technologically and so there is need for us to review our laws on that,” he said.
“The bill, if passed into law, will make sure that every Nigerian is confident enough to give information about crime.”
Several other legislators who contributed to the debate stressed the importance of the bill in tackling the Boko Haram insurgency.
The bill passed second reading after it was put to a voice vote by Yakubu Dogara, the speaker.
