A fire outbreak, on Tuesday, destroyed a section of the Ogbo Ogwu market in Onitsha, Anambra state.

According to NAN, Martin Agbili, fire service chief in the state, said the cause of the fire and extent of damage are yet to be ascertained.

The fire was said to have been caused by a “chemical explosion”, but the Anambra state government said investigation into the incident is going.

The state is also yet to confirm if there are casualties, but some persons are said to have died in the fire.

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), in a post on his official Twitter handle on Tuesday, described the incident as saddening.

“I just received the news of the inferno at Ogbo Ogwu International Market, Bridge Head, Onitsha, following a suspected chemical explosion in the area. I am saddened by the loss of lives, many injuries and material losses recorded,” the tweet reads.

“I sincerely commiserate with the families who lost their loved ones in this ugly incident and pray for the quick recovery of the injured.

“May God grant eternal rest to the dead. In the past few days, we have had cases of fire outbreaks in different parts of the country.

“The prevalent high temperature in the country, following the present dry season, all contribute to frequent occurrence of fire outbreaks.

“I urge everyone to take more precautionary measures in handling possible explosives and highly inflammable objects at these times and be more safety conscious in our individual environments.”

The development comes days after fire destroyed a section of the Tejuosho market in Yaba, Lagos state.
