‘Residents killed’ as gunmen attack Benue communities

Unknown gunmen have attacked some communities in Gwer west LGA of Benue state.

The attack is said to have occurred in the early hours of Monday, but the exact figure of casualties has not been confirmed.

Catherine Anene, Benue police spokesperson, confirmed the attack on Monday, adding that the command has  not received full details of what took place.

According to NAN, Anene said the gunmen invaded Mbamondu and Vengav in Avihijume council ward in Udam, and Tse Amgbem which is around Aondona.

The development comes amid an increase in the spate of attacks on communities across the country.

In recent times, bandits, insurgents and gunmen have invaded security facilities, schools, and homes, leading to kidnapping and killings across states.

Communities in Benue have also been attacked, with residents killed and several others injured.

In one of the most recent incidents of violence in Benue, 11 soldiers were killed after troops came under attack while on a routine patrol in Konshisha LGA of the state

Days later, suspected herdsmen killed seven people following an attack on an internally displaced persons camp in Abagena community in the state.

Following the rising insecurity affecting his state, Samuel Ortom, Benue state governor, had called on the federal government to declare a state of emergency.
