Residents threaten to sue Akwa Ibom over collapsed radio mast

Residents of Shelter Afrique Estate have threatened to take legal action against the Akwa Ibom government and the owner of Mixx Radio 88.7 FM over the collapse of the station’s transmission mast.

A part of the 110-metre mast was said to have collapsed on January 7 after a slight rainfall, subsequently posing danger to residents within its axis.

Led by Larry Ettah, former group managing director of UAC Nigeria Plc, the residents demanded that the mast should relocated because of the danger it portends to their lives and property.

In a petition filed on their behalf by Victor Iyanam & Co, the residents wondered why the government granted permission for the structure to be erected in a “highly populated residential estate”.

They further alleged that the owner of the station abused his power to ensure that regulators overlooked issues of environmental impact and safety in erecting the mast.

They demanded that the state government restrain the station from engaging in further rehabilitation activities.

The residents also urged the government to order the dismantling and relocation of the structure altogether.

Meanwhile, the state is yet to officially comment on the issue.
