Reuben Abati: Chasing powers and principalities… and shadows

Reuben Abati: Chasing powers and principalities… and shadows
October 15
12:03 2016

I have just read Reuben Abati’s  ‘The Spiritual Side of Aso Villa’. When I first received the text of the article from a friend, I protested vehemently that it could not have been written by Dr. Abati.  The grammar did not read like his but more importantly, the article did not bear up to any test of logic and clear thought contrary to Dr. Abati’s well-known persona.  Dr. Abati could not be attributing poor decision-making in the uppermost echelon of Nigerian government to evil spirits.  Or could he?

To prove my point, I checked Dr. Abati’s Twitter account.  Lo and behold, the latest tweet was a reference to the article.  Still unconvinced, I followed the link in the tweet to his webpage and there was the said article!  There, right there, was an article in which Dr. Abati wrote in boldface that ‘I am not ordinarily a superstitious person, but working in the Villa, I eventually became convinced that there must be something supernatural about power and closeness to it.’

According to Dr. Abati, ‘when [Nigerian] presidents make mistakes, they are probably victims of a force higher than we can imagine.’  He continues that ‘the mistakes [of the current regime] don’t look normal, the same way they didn’t look normal under President Jonathan.’  Dr. Abati is therefore convinced that ‘there is an evil spell enveloping this country’.  ‘We need to rescue Nigeria from the forces of darkness’ and ‘Aso Villa should be converted into a spiritual museum and abandoned.’

My shock and horror know no bounds.  Dr. Abati elaborated on a conviction in evil spirits and demons assailing the Presidential Villa in Abuja.  He ascribed accidents and health crises afflicting people in the Villa and their families to evil spirits.  Dr. Abati complains that ‘from cancer to brain and prostate surgery and whatever, the Villa was full of agonizing patients.’  This was of course, according to him, not natural but due to witchcraft.

Miraculous recovery occurred upon leaving the service of the Villa.  Dr. Abati illustrated with his best attempt at locker-room talk.  According to him, ‘by the same token, all those our colleagues who used to come to work to complain about a certain death beneath their waists and who relied on videos and other instruments to entertain their wives … have all experienced a reawakening.’

If the article were by a lesser-regarded individual, even one of Nigeria’s emerging social‑media ‘infuencers’, it would have merited at best a chuckle and summary dismissal.  But from Reuben Abati?   Dr. Abati is writing about ‘persons in the Villa walking upside down, head to the ground’???

Reuben Abati was special media adviser to President Jonathan from 2011.  He holds a PhD from the University of Ibadan and was a first-class honours graduate of the University of Calabar where he was class valedictorian.  He is very well-read with degrees in drama, literature and law, among others.  He has also received professional training in some of the world’s top schools including the Said School of Business at Oxford University.

Dr. Abati has translated academic excellence into a sterling career as a journalist, academic and intellectual in Nigeria.  His incisive analyses of social, economic and political issues in leading print and audio-visual media, particularly The Guardian and TV’s Patito’s Gang, have earned him a huge following in Nigeria.   His appointment as leading presidential spokesperson for the Jonathan regime was the culmination of a quarter of a century as prominent social critic in Nigeria.

With all those antecedents and with all his intellect, experience and exposure, Dr. Abati’s (new) best answer to Nigeria’s problems of governance is evil spirits and demons?  It beggars belief and indeed causes one to worry about the kind of people we have looked to for leadership in Nigeria.

The pity of all this is that a significant number of educated Nigerians would probably side with Dr. Abati.  His views, coming as they are from an immediate-past ‘insider’ in the Villa, would be vindication of their conviction that Nigeria’s problems are down to a battle with spiritual powers and principalities.   It would foment justification for the perennial call for prayers to salvage Nigeria from Satanic bondage.

It is of course absolute balderdash to any rational thinking person.  The question is whether there are many of those left in Nigeria?

When I was growing up in Nigeria, I was taught that Christianity was a religion that had destroyed all other powers and principalities and replaced them with not just a Supreme Being but also with a scientific rationality that was the natural adjunct of ascription to the Truth.  The same was ostensibly true of the other two in the troika of Abrahamic religions, to wit Islam and Judaism.  The rational leanings of these religions – apart from their ultimate location in the supernatural – enabled them not only to encircle the world but also to be the fountains of scientific learning and technology for two millennia.

In the last thirty years however in Nigeria, we have experienced a powerful new creed in our received religions – a resurgence of belief in all kinds of nonsense about spirits and demons that threatens to displace any modicum of recourse to rationality.  Instead therefore of diligently seeking temporal and scientific answers to our litany of problems, we take the lazy route of blaming it on the unseen and demonic.  Little wonder that a federal government– the one Reuben served – in an impoverished Nigeria could sanction the disbursement of millions of dollars for ‘prayers.’

Dr. Abati, there were accidents in presidential convoys you were in because the roads are bad, the drivers are poorly trained and the odds of having an accident when a line of cars is driving recklessly at over 140 kilometers an hour are much higher.  The presidential aircraft which refused to start probably did so because the money for their maintenance had been diverted to ‘prayer warriors’.

Men have erectile dysfunction when they do high-pressure jobs, have sleepless nights and are under stress.  Ask the makers of Viagra and Cialis – they will provide you with scientific studies and useful statistics.  Middle-aged males and older people, the kind who populate the Villa, are more likely than a younger demographic to suffer, respectively, prostate cancer and the other ailments listed.

And of course, accidents do happen! The fire incidents you listed, Dr. Abati?  Well, that’s why they put you through fire drills regularly at Oxford and all the other highfalutin institutions you’ve ever attended abroad.  They realise that even with best efforts at prevention, the risk of fire always exists so they plan, scientifically, for evacuation in the event.  They do NOT blame witches and wizards!

As for sub-optimal decisions coming from the Villa, when we have those we hitherto believed were our crème de la crème of intellectualism expounding a belief in the supernatural as the root cause, should we ever be surprised at the outcomes? I rest my case, Dr. Abati.  And no, I am not a spirit.

I can deduce from your piece that you do not subscribe to any form of spirituality in human affairs. The article is therefore not written for your kind. That does not make you superior though.

Take it or leave it, you don’t need a sooth sayer or a pastor or Reuben Abati to tell you that the supernatural is a reality. And why would it be a surprise to anyone to read that there are demonic manifestations in Aso Villa. A place that has housed generations of godless leaders. men and women who have shed innocent blood and made countless sacrifices to spiritual forces. You still don’t believe in the supernatural? Ask your occultic leaders the wicked things they do in pursuit of their political ambitions. Take a Pastor and make Him president of this nation, it won’t make any difference unless He is spiritual and bold enough to uproot and nullify the evil spiritual transactions that were made by our so called leaders and national Fathers. And the only way any man can do that is if he does not bring Himself under the influence and control of these forces through greed and compromise. contracting prayer warriors will not do the job, only a president who knows God, understands and possess Holiness, righteousness and Faith in Christ Jesus. Only a president who is ready to inspire His cabinet that they don’t have to be slaves to demonic controls but rather take control over those forces by submitting in truth and sincerity to the authority of God in Christ Jesus.

It is a big error to be doing the biddings of Satan and then contract prayers against Him. Such prayers won’t work.

Let them turn from their wickedness, receive salvation and they’ll be exempted from the plague and curses.

Mr. Ntephe is entitled to his position on Abati’s piece but that does not in any way take away what most Nigerians know about governance.
We are not in a hurry to forget the confession of Rogers and human sacrifice in Asso Villa during the time of Abacha. Infact Abati in economical with truth, the blood for bathing he mentioned, is not animal blood as he wants us to believe.
Even for ordinary local government councilors, interested candidates are made to take aoth in various shrines, from east to west and north to south as dictated by political godfathers.

I believe in the supernatural but our readiness to put everything on some demonic activity as the conclusion of every matter has been trying to my understanding of same. Yes evil spirits exist, but they exist for people. The country isn’t run by evil spirits. It’s run by people who need to sit up and find true solutions and keep up the fight to move the nation forward. Succumbing to these so-called powers as the summary of our challenges will gives us the excuse to sit back and do nothing. It’s appalling.

Peter Nteph, yoruba people say when a child does not know herbs, he calls it vegetable. Wether you believe it or not, the unseen spiritual world is far more than the physical world you see and know about. May I shock you? It is this spiritual that controls the physical.Where were you and how old were you in 1999, when Sargent Rogers made startling confessions about all kinds of sacrifices in the same Aso villa? What about what he said the buried at the epicenter of Nigeria? You can argue facts but not a man’s experience and testimony. Where you live are there no witches and wizards? Don’t they practice enchantments and sorceries? Don’t people belong to occult groups? The mere fact that these words are in English language shows that they are present in those environments. Either you want to form as our children will say here that is pretending not to know. Or you are displaying abject ignorance. The Bible which is the Christian holy book,(at least you mentioned Christianity) tells us that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.Me Nteph, what are weapons and strongholds? People like us always knew that Nigerian problems are not ordinary. That is why we keep praying for this precious country. If you are in doubt, come back and do business, mix with different people from all economic, ethnic and religious background.I seriously take offense when I read your kind of comments.

I can see that you are even more naive than Dr R Abati himself. There are spiritual and physical laws. Just like the law of gravity, sowing and reaping, electicity etc. For the fact that you disagree with their existence doesn’t mean you would not be affected by them. If you mistakenly touch a naked wire what happens? It will spare you because of your ignorance. What he said even though it’s put in straight language is absolutely true. Believe it or not the devil exists. Do you know what our folks do for the sake of power? When you give yourself to the devil you can’t just walk out on him. There are higher powers which control the affairs of men. It’s either we are on God’s side or Devils side. I don’t know Dr R Abati but am well conversant with things that happen in the corridors or power.

Mr. Peter, I think it is irresponsible of you to begin to castigate a man who has criticized many governments and finally was in the seat of power and is out to narrate his experience. You see talk is cheap. I am not surprised that what you read from Reuben does not make sense to you. It is either you belong to the dark kingdom and wants to deceive the public or you are ignorant of spiritual world. But watch out, Almighty God will give you an experience that will make you understand what Reuben has narrated, assuming you are not being mischievous. When that happens, be kind enough to let us know your experience.

The bible says we should cast down everything/knowledge/imagination that exalt itself against the knowledge of God and bring under subjection to God’s authority. That is what Dr Abati has done. He may have all the qualifications you(Mr peter) mentioned but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be real and voice his experiences, physical or spiritual, of course he serves a spiritual father. God is a spirit. And with that piece, my respect for him intensified.

Mr Peter, do you believe in God’s existence? If you do, then don’t be oblivious of the fact that there are principalities and powers. The seat of power in this country is obviously under seige like Abati said and it is only by God’s hands can it be liberated and we will continue in prayers to God because we want to experience the real change.

It is 1.02 am and I am here reading this piece. When I got to the comment by SEER I found myself laughing uncontrollably. If Abati took bribe could it not be by the influence of those demons? I have not associated Reuben Abati with spiritual insight but talking from experience he is revealing something we must all listen to. Abati should be encouraged to make personal confessions of how he danced to the tune of demons while at the Villa. As far as I know the Jonathan government in which he served was not a kingdom divided, it was wholesale for satan and demons.

Peter, congratulations for your fine rebuttal to Dr. Abati’s article. Your write-up reveals you’re a well educated individual, but lacking in knowledge of the Word of God. This statement is not intended to judge you as you did Dr. Abati. From the comments in this space, I conclude that it’s so very easy to be dismissive of Dr. Abati’s points and ridicule the basis for his article. Nevertheless, I salute his courage for calling the attention of the general public to several significant issues highlighted in his piece, knowing full well that he risks being ridiculed and shamed.

Peter, the points you raised to undercut Dr. Abati’s concerning accidents in Presidential convoys and related issues are absolutely correct. However, you need to ask yourself, why are the roads still bad, even when construction and/or repairs have have been paid for several times? Why do the culprits escape justice every single time? Whether or not you agree, I posit that these issues are more spiritual than physical, and for that reason, lasting solutions must have spiritual origins or dimensions. However, this does not preclude the construction of durable infrastructure.

I have been away from Nigeria for over 30 years and not current on the issue relating to budgetary allocations of billions of Naira for the purpose of performing “spiritual cleansing” of the land. Unquestionably, this is ill-advised. But then, I’m not surprised. This is what contributes to the chronic vicious cycle of darkness in the country. You cannot expunge darkness with the instrumentality of evil.

In closing, please note that there’s nothing socially, economically, or technologically backward with understanding and ameliorating dark spiritual covering with the proven superior power that’s in the name of Jesus. As an example, 12-15 years ago, several states in the southern United States experienced severe drought. Realizing that the problem was more likely a spiritual one than physical, in 2007, the honorable governor of the state of Georgia, Dr. Sonny Perdue called a day of prayer at the footsteps of the state Capitol to ask God for rain. Within two days of the gathering, the heavens open with rain
Since then, the state of Georgia has experienced no drought. Note though, there were plenty of naysayers at the time, but there was no fund allocation

Quite a thoughtful article Mr. Ntephe. It’s a shame you can’t find the time to communicate with the shareholders of ERHC Energy, of which you are CEO. Those who invested in and trusted you are now facing a total loss as the stock trades at a fraction of a penny, yet not a word from you in months.

Won’t you please honor your fiduciary duty and let people know if ERHC is going bankrupt, what the drilling results are, if you and other insiders are still drawing a salary from all the toxic debt and dilution you are dumping on the market, if there are any plans at all for survival and return of the money people invested in your company.

Please have the courage to face the truth and deal fairly and responsibly with your shareholders.
