Aramide Kasumu, founder of Lifestake Foundation, who was deeply involved in the #SaveMayowa fundraising campaign, says the family of Mayowa Ahmed realised N85 million from the campaign but lied to the public that only N30 million was raised.
Ahmed Mayowa Shukurat, a Stage 4 ovarian cancer patient, needed funds for medical treatment outside the country, prompting her family, friends and well-wishers to kick off an #SaveMayowa campaign to save her life.
Kasumu, who said she personally drove Mayowa from her house to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), explained that the family’s story on how the money would be spent on Mayowa’s recovery did not add up.
“The brothers came publicly and said they raised N30million when in actual fact they raised N85million,” she said. “And they said they had a visa when they didnt have a visa. They solicited funds to go to America, now they’re saying they’re going Dubai. So a lot of things were not adding up; they were not being straightforward.”
According to Toyin Aimakhu, who was also involved in the campaign, the fund-raiser has turned out to be a scam.
The Nigerian police has waded into the situation, and are expected to see to the judicious spending of the funds raised for Mayowa’s recovery.
