Rivers accuses police of planning to kill protesting students
The Rivers government says it has uncovered a plot by the state’s chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) and some “evil-minded” police officers to kill students.
In a statement on Tuesday, Emma Okah, commissioner of information and communication, said the plan of the APC and police is to instigate students of tertiary institutions to protest the non-payment of bursary, while a few of them would be shot.
Okah said this would give the government a bad name and “label the state as unsafe”.
The commissioner said the plan is being orchestrated to create crisis in the state, instil fear in the minds of the people, discourage inflow of investments and give the impression that the governor is not competent.
He advised students to stay away from any planned protest.
“While we recognise the right of any citizen to assemble and carry out peaceful protests within the law, the present planned protest by the students is politically motivated and laced with huge danger as nobody knows who may be killed in the process,” the statement by Okah read.
