Robbers attack police station, four banks in Benue

A yet-to-be-ascertained number of people has been reportedly killed during an attack on Friday by armed robbers in Otukpo town in Benue state.

 Confirming the incident to TheCable on Friday, Andrew Aganga, a resident of the community, said the robbers invaded four banks at about 2 p.m. and operated till 4 p.m.

Aganga said the robbers also attacked a police station near the banks and disarmed all the operatives on duty.

He added that First Bank, United Bank of Africa (UBA), Stanbic Bank, and Zenith Bank were the financial institutions attacked by the robbers.

“It was a broad daylight robbery, it took place around 2 p.m. till in the evening around 4 p.m. before they left,” he said.

“They robbed UBA, First Bank, Zenith Bank, and Stanbic Bank. They robbed the police station near the banks and disarmed the policemen, even the vigilantes.

“I have a friend who was killed during the attack. In fact, I saw him this afternoon and we even waved at each other.”

Trending videos of the incident on social media showed the robbers operated unchallenged and destroyed many bank facilities.

When contacted, Sewuese Anene, police spokesperson in the state, confirmed the attack but said she was yet to receive details on the incident.

“I am aware that there is an attack but I don’t have details at the moment,” Anene said.
