Roger Federer wins historic 20th Grand Slam title

Australian Open defending champion Roger Federer beat Marin Cilic to retain the men’s singles title on Sunday.

The Swiss is now the first man to win 20 Grand Slam titles.

Federer, who won the competition a year ago, has equalled Novak Djokovic and Roy Emerson on six Australian Open titles.

The Swiss defeated the Croat in a thrilling three hours five-match set of 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to claim the crown.

The 36-year-old is the oldest finalist in Melbourne since Ken Rosewall, 37, and Mal Anderson, 36, met 46 years ago.

Caroline Wozniacki on Saturday claimed her first major Grand slam women’s title following an excellent display against Simona Halep.
